Chelan

Chelan, and also Manson, two small cities in the Lake Chelan Valley of Eastern Washington where the Cascade Mountains meet the desert, are the favorite destinations for vacationers. What you see is what you get! Outstanding back-to-nature scenery, out-of-this-world accommodations and dining plus outrageous things to do. The Chelan Chamber of Commerce lists and enlarges upon 101 possibilities!

A few events that entice visitors are “Top Dog” Parade in downtown Chelan in March, Shore to Shore Marathon in July, and Hydroplane events in the fall. A number of fascinating events such as the Rotary Century Ride are held at different times of the year at Riverwalk Park Pavilion.

To really appreciate magnificent Lake Chelan, known as the largest natural fresh-water lake in Washington, cruise the lake on the Lady of the Lake cruise boat, keeping in mind you are in the largest gorge in North America with Mountains as high as 10,00 feet above you. The upper lake holds treasures like Holden Village and Stehekin, not accessible by road.

In this outdoor paradise water sports like water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, parasailing, canoeing and swimming delight the adventurous. Wind surfing, kayaking and hang gliding are also popular.

Chelan and Manson offer great shopping. In this “Small Town Americana” mix with friendly people as you shop for antiques, home decor pieces, toys, special gifts and more. Or shop at a Farmer’s Market for delicious produce, baked goods, jams and jellies and homemade crafts. Many tourists order apples to take home from this region, so renowned for its fruit.

Lake Chelan Valley is also well-known for wine-tasting, golfing (including putting courses), and fishing in rivers like the Stehekin and Columbia and lakes like Rose and Wapato.

Besides cruising the 55-mile lake on Lady of the Lake, you may want to check out the Innamorata (Indian for sweetheart). This 55-foot boat was once owned by Dean Martin. Evening cruises are appealing.

For accommodations choose a B&B, hotel, motel or resort. Dine out or take out, you’ll find good options in the two cities. Choose traditional American food, Mexican, pizza, specialties or drive-in take out. The wineries are impressive, more evidence of the impact of fruit in this beautiful region.

Small wonder Chelan country keeps growing in popularity.
